APTER 9

Was confusion a key component of Wisdom Leadership? If so, Ruf felt as though he was already a seasoned leader. After each session with Dal, he felt a little more intrigued – and a lot more baffled. This latest thing about smiling was a perfect example. That made zero sense as a management tool for him.

Still….

“What was that?” said one of Ruf’s assistant managers while informing him of a new problem.

“What was what?” Ruf replied.

“Your lip. It looked like it curled up there for a second.”

Ruf decided to see how far he could take this. He smiled broadly and then broke into laughter. As he did, the urge to laugh became stronger and stronger. He wound up laughing so hard that tears came to his eyes.

“Ruf, I’m not sure what’s going on here,” the assistant said. He was clearly miffed, but Ruf kept laughing.

The other dog was quickly losing his composure. “You know, it isn’t very respectful to treat an associate this way.”

Ruf kept laughing.

“Especially when we’re talking about such a serious matter. The new problems with the feed delivery prove that the whole goat plan won’t work.”

The serious expression on the other dog’s face when he delivered his last complaint caused Ruf to howl with laughter. He glanced out of the corner of his eye at the assistant manager. He didn’t want the dog to be too offended. That’s when he saw the assistant manager’s lip curl into a smile. Then he began to chuckle as well.

“Ruf, I’m serious about this,” he said, but his own laughter caught up with him.

Soon, both dogs were rolling on the floor in laughter.

Several minutes later, their laughter subsided until the assistant manager said, “Really, Ruf, I’m serious.”

Then their laughter erupted again.

The next morning, Ruf reported the laughing event to OM, Dal, Nay, and Pek. They all chuckled as he told his story and Ruf shook his head at the absurdity of the whole thing (though he had to admit it was refreshing).

As it turned out, though, Ruf wasn’t the only one who had an unusual afternoon the day before.

“I was all set to do everything differently,” Nay said about his experience with the goats. “But they jumped right in on me and before I knew it, I was chewing them from one side of the hill to the other. At some point, I realized what had happened, and I got even angrier. There was no way I could try that smiling thing that Ruf tried. None of this seemed funny to me. But as I thought about what to do, all I could remember was Dal mentioning chasing my tail. So I did that. Three times.”

OM’s eyes practically bugged out of his head. “You did? What happened?”

Nay lowered his head to the ground and shook it in wonderment. “It stopped everything on the spot. I mean everything. They shut up and when I stopped chasing my tail, I saw that their eyes were as wide as tin cans. One of the goats asked me if I had an itch.
